Originally Published on Aug 10, 2013 Catching Halalau at Waimea Bay. They were biting pretty decent this morning. I caught about 30 Halalu, and about 1 dozen Opelu. Fun day. Its dangerous fishing with all the 20′ long leaders, and fishing side by side. [Admin: FYI – “Halalu” are junior “Big-Eyed Scad”, a very popular fish that are either fried and eaten or used as bait for the ever popular Ulua/GT.]

Originally Published on Jun 12, 2013 A fishing trip that went incredibly right. Every once in a while you hear about someone landing a big one on light tackle. Today, it was my turn. While fishing for papio [Papio: Jack Crevalle/Ulua under 10 lbs.] on the eastern coast of Kalaupapa, a big one bites. 14 pound test monofilament main line, 25 pound test monofilament leader, 6′ medium/light rod, Penn 5500 spin fisher reel. The fish? Somewhere in the 30-40 pound range.
